Voice Yoga for Grief 2026
Voice Yoga for Grief is an intimate eight week online journey for a small group of no more than twelve people. Through voice, singing, embodied practice, ritual and shared reflection, we will explore ways of meeting grief that honour the uniqueness of your own experience, while also remembering that grief is something deeply human and something we do not have to carry alone.
This work grew out of my own experience of painful loss and my search for ways to be with grief that went beyond words. I found myself turning again and again to the voice. To singing, sounding, breath work and ritual. Over time, these practices became a way of giving shape to feelings that were difficult to name, of staying close to what hurt without becoming completely consumed by it and of finding moments of connection and aliveness alongside sorrow. Since then, I have shared this work with many others and this will be the third time I have held Voice Yoga for Grief as an extended group journey.
Grief can make us withdraw. We may protect ourselves from anything that feels exposing, tender or close to the heart. Sometimes that protection is necessary. But over time we may also begin to long for somewhere we can soften a little, make contact with what is here and be alongside others who understand something of this landscape.
This course offers such a place.
It is a carefully held container in which you are invited to come exactly as you are. Nothing is forced. You do not need to be able to sing, perform, explain your grief or share anything you do not wish to share. You are encouraged to listen to your own limits and move at your own pace.
And you will not be doing this alone.
There is something profoundly supportive about gathering regularly with the same small group of people - those who may have very different stories but who understand something of grief from the inside. Over the eight weeks we create a community in which grief does not need to be hidden, hurried or made more comfortable for somebody else.
This course is for all forms of grief, not only bereavement.
You may be grieving the death of someone you love, the ending of a relationship, changes in health or identity, fertility or parenthood, ageing, displacement, ecological or collective loss, a future you imagined, a life that has changed course or something you cannot easily name. You may simply feel the presence of loss, longing or change and want somewhere to meet it more consciously.
During our time together we will explore:
- The foundations of Voice Yoga and reconnecting with, or “re-membering”, your voice gently guided vocal improvisation, mantra, exploring raga, medicine songs and other songs that can become companions in difficult times
- Breath and somatic practices to help us listen more closely to the body
- Ways of using sound when words feel inadequate
- Singing and sounding with difficult emotions rather than needing to analyse or explain them
- Ritual as a way of giving form and attention to loss and change
- Creating your own personal grief ritual or ceremony
- Practices you can return to beyond the course, as your relationship with grief continues to evolve
The voice can give us access to something that thought alone cannot always reach. Sometimes it offers respite from the continual activity of the mind. At other times it allows us to come closer to sorrow, anger, longing, tenderness or love and let them have sound.
As the course is online, when we sing and improvise together everyone except me will usually be muted. This means you can explore your own voice freely without being heard by the rest of the group, while still having the experience of practising together. There will also be space for optional sharing and reflection and everything shared within the group will of course be treated confidentially.
I do not see grief as something to overcome or complete. It changes as we change. What we have loved continues to live in us in different ways. My hope is that these eight weeks offer time, practice and companionship for listening to that change. A place to give grief breath, body and voice and to discover your own ways of carrying what has been loved into the life that continues.
